This tour traces the footsteps of Afro-Brazilian culture in Rio, from the first arrival of the African slaves to the indissociable image of Rio and Carnival.
Depart the hotel towards Praça XV, the original port of Rio, from the foundation up to 1811, when the arrival of slaves was transferred to Cais (docks) do Valongo, in a then remote area of the city, away from society’s eyes. At Praça XV, in the Royal Palace, Princess Isabel signed end of slavery in 1888. Through Cais do Valongo, passed over 2 million Africans, the majority from Congo and Angola. Continue walking to the newly restored Jardins (gardens) do Valongo, a 1906 attempt to erase the past during the Pereira Passos era of transforming Rio into a cosmopolitan Capital. From here you can see the old Largo do Depósito, where the actual commerce took place. Climb the Conceição Hill from where you will have breathtaking view of downtown and Favela da Providencia, the first of Rio. Descending on the opposite side we will get a glimpse of Guanabara Bay and the area once known as Little Africa, arriving at Pedra do Sal. Here, freed and slaved Africans gathered to work, rest, sing, dance, and celebrate their culture. It is here that many years later samba gained its first tunes. This rhythm became a symbol of Rio and Brazil, to a point that in 1984 Sambadrome was built, an arena dedicated to the Carnival Parade, “The Temple of Samba”, our last stop on this tour.
Lunch at Galeto Sat's (Beverage not included)
Chicken Galetos and meats roasted over the coals, always on the spot, and a wine list with more than 300 labels of canines divided between white and yellow, all researched and tasted by the owners Sérgio and Elaine Rabello.
This is the essence of Galeto Sat's, founded in 1962 in Copacabana. The house of coals and cachaça today has a branch in Botafogo and has been run since 2010 by the couple Rabello - who after retirement decided to buy the bar and change places, from former regulars of the small green tiled room and granite floor to the other side of the counter.
Besides being delighted with the galetos - chickens slaughtered within 25 days, with 700 grams of meat and crispy skin, served with homemade garlic-lemon or garlic-orange sauce, accompanied by the most diverse garnishes - try the "Barriga do Serjão", a delicious pork belly crackling, marinated with herbs, accompanied by mini caramelized onions, served with pickled garlic. To go with it, Brahma draft beer and cachaça are the most requested. In the list of spirits, it is possible to find among the aged ones Barris 39, Harmonie Schnaps, Canarinha, and Áurea Custódia. Of the white cachaças, the highlights are Século XVIII, Menino do Rio, Max Cana, Armazém Vieira, and Serra Limpa.
