Free Day in Bogota

Today you will have a free day in the capital of Colombia, Bogota, where there is plenty to see and do. Bogota is a business city, a huge metropolis that offers a wide range of cultural and entertainment offerings. The city has an extensive network of museums, restaurants, cultural centers, shopping malls, parks and entertainment venues. Some places we recommend visiting are:

• In the morning, we recommend visiting one of the most important markets in Bogotá: Paloquemao. Here, you can taste a variety of exotic fruits unique to the country. 

• After lunch, head to Usaquén, a charming colonial neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, boutique stores, and craft markets. Near the central square, you will find an exclusive space featuring unique pieces made by local artisans, including sculptures, paintings, and textiles. 

• For a delightful dessert or a great cup of coffee, we suggest Bendit'Arte Café or L'atelier du Café.

You will be taken by private transport from Bogotá to the small town of Zipaquirá, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours away.

The Salt Cathedral was built in a quiet part of a still active salt mine. On entering the salt mine you can still admire the salt crystals that have formed on the walls. The tour is divided into two parts, the first part is based on the story of Jesus Christ. The second part of the tour takes you to the impressive part of the salt mine where the actual cathedral was built. Marvel at how the huge galleries were converted and now form a capelin. After your visit to the Salt Cathedral you will be taken back to your hotel in Bogotá.

Today you will explore the Colombian capital of Bogotá during a walking tour with an English-speaking guide. The area of modern Bogotá was first populated by indigenous groups who migrated from Mesoamerica. Among these groups were the Muisca who settled in what are now the neighborhoods of Cundinamarca and Boyacá. With the arrival of the Spanish, the area became a major settlement, founded by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. The city later became the capital of the Spanish provinces and the seat of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. When independence came, Bogotá became the capital of Gran Colombia and later the capital of the Republic of Colombia. Located at 2,600 meters above sea level, Bogotá is a city of over 8 million inhabitants.  

Bogotá has 2 different sectors for tourism. The first is the old Candelaria Historic District scattered with traditional colonial houses and cobblestoned streets. The second sector and by contrast, the north of the city boasts modernity and innovation. Tourists will find government buildings, as well as a variety of trendy shops, restaurants and bars. 

Bogotá's historic city center "La Candelaria" with its impressive churches, the State Palace and the "Plaza Bolívar" will be explored with the company of your guide explaining each building’s history in detail. Furthermore, you can visit the world-famous gold museum "Museo del Oro", the Emerald Museum and the museum of the famous Colombian artist Botero. 

Bogotá is an inspiring city that offers something new every day. In 2010, the capital of Colombia was chosen as a "Must See" destination by the prestigious New York Times newspaper. FREE DAY CARTAGENA DE INDIAS

Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1533 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Heredia. This charming Caribbean city was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire in America during the colonial era. Nowadays it is one of the most important and preferred destinations for travelers during their stay in Colombia. The city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 due to its historical center, its history and the set of fortresses, walls and military infrastructure built by the Spanish to defend the city from the English pirates during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the diversity and cultural richness of the city the mixture between the indigenous and African cultures, as well as the Spanish influence is clearly evident.

 
During the colonial era, Cartagena was besieged by English pirates who tried to steal the gold that was sent to the port of the city to be shipped back to Spain. Due to this, the Castle of San Felipe and the walls that surround the old city were built. The Castle of San Felipe is, in fact, one of the largest military fortresses built by the Spaniards in South America. During the wars of independence, this city was the most crucial in order to defeat the Spanish army and that is why Cartagena is called the "Heroic City". Cartagena therefore preserved its architecture, walls and histories and became the most important tourist destination in the country. In the city you can walk among the old streets, walk on the top of the walls, try the traditional cuisine and listen to the musical rhythms known as Colombian Caribbean. You can also visit the modern area of ​​Bocagrande and El Laguito. If you are a sun, sand and beach enthusiast, you can visit the Rosario Islands. They are an archipelago of islands that belong to the city. There you can bathe in the warm and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean and enjoy beautiful, white sandy beaches.

Our City Tour will start with the transfer from the city center to the La Popa Convent. From the convent, that is located on a 150m high hill (highest point of Cartagena) you will have a great view over the whole city. From there, we will proceed to the biggest fort which the Spaniards ever built in South America – the San Felipe de Barajas Fortress. We will visit the whole fort including some of its tunnels, as well as the statue of Don Blas de Lezo.
 

After this, we will go back to the city center and visit the most beautiful streets, churches and squares in the historic city center. We will pass the official entrance of the walled city; the clock tower (Torre del Reloj). Behind it, we will find the monument of Don Pedro de Heredia, the founder of Cartagena de Indias (1533). The guide will tell us about the story of Cartagena’s foundation and will also share interesting stories full of legends and pirates.
 

After exploring some of Cartagena's iconic sites, we will take you to a fantastic location for an enriching cooking class experience.

What better way to get to know the Cartagena culture than by getting into their kitchens for a Ceviche and Mojito cooking class, here you will get a broader view of the culture and learn about the local gastronomic traditions.

A corner of Africa in America! Benkos Bioho, a runaway slave who, accompanied by 36 other male and female slaves, hid in the area and found what is now known as San Basilio de Palenque, the first slavery-free town in Colombia. Their palenquera language and traditions and rituals remained intact since they had no connection with the main road and the city and remained isolated until the seventies when the famous boxer “Kid Pambelé  placed this settlement on the map and brought with him access roads to the village.

Located an hour and a half’s drive from Cartagena by road, this African corner, declared by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity, offers to visitors a window on Afro-descendant history in Colombia and America.

A guide and private vehicle will pick you up at your hotel and take you comfortably to San Basilio de Palenque, where a local guide will receive us and we will learn a little of the Palenquero dialect, history and culture of this great town. Through craft arts such as the work of the Spinners, who with their strong movement prepare the corn to feed their families, and the beautiful art of weaving through the hands of artisans who tell their stories through their handicraft we get even closer to the culture. After exploring the village and its surroundings we will enjoy a delicious typical lunch in the palenquera way.

After breakfast, transfer from your hotel to the harbor in Cartagena and enjoy a day in Rosario Island - San Pedro De Majagua.

The Rosario Islands are located approximately 40 km (approx. 1 hour by boat), south- west of Cartagena. They consist of 27 islands with 20 hectares of coral reefs. Explore the impressive, beautiful landscapes of the Rosario Islands with their clear waters, gentle breezes, and maritime life such as dolphins. Today, the entire surrounding area, including the Islas de Barú and the Islas de San Bernardo, are officially protected sites

During this day trip on Majagua Island, you will have enough time to explore the beautiful nature and relax on the beach. Enjoy a welcome cocktail upon arrival, and you will also be served lunch. In the afternoon, you will return to Cartagena. The boat returns from Majagua to Cartagena around 14h30 - 15h00 subject to weather conditions.

Transfer from the harbor to your selected hotel in Cartagena to freshen up. Late in the afternoon, enjoy Rum and Chocolate Tasting.

You will be picked up from your hotel and start our tour by walking to the bar, where an expert mixologist will tell you about the history and characteristics of this drink. This journey of flavors will take you to taste different Colombian rums, some of them cataloged as the best in the world. You will learn their secrets and discover how wide and rich the world of Rum can be and how small changes in the process give life to so many different flavors and emotions.

Spaniards brought many things and customs to America that transformed the continent. In the same way, we have adapted many of them to our culture and created an identity and products of our own. This is the case of sugar cane, which was taken to another level and today is the basis of one of the most exquisite drinks on the planet. Join us in this space of knowledge and fun where we would learn from the most famous drink of the Caribbean, the Rum.

After getting to know the living rum from a different perspective, enjoying one will be a real experience.

Later in the evening, to say farewell to Cartagena, you will enjoy dinner at the beautiful Montesacro Resto Bar. Here, you will delight in an exquisite mix of fusion food. Dinner includes three courses and one drink, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
