Women in Wildfire

As a volunteer backcountry ranger in Yellowstone Natl Park in 1988, I caught the wildfire bug. The backcountry of the park closed due to many wildfires. I was then trained as a firefighter. After a crazy summer of fires in YNP, I then obtained a seasonal fire positions in the Everglades Natl Park & Big Cypress Natl Preserve, then up to Savannah River Natl Lab(Nuclear) as a permanent firefighter that launched me West to Redmond IHC, then on the Deschutes & Ochoco NF and the Prineville Helitack which became the Central Oregon Rappel Crew. An Aviation Officer on the Fre-Win NF and a final career ending position as an Aviation Training Specialist for the Office of Aviation Services. Now retired, I assist with a Complex Incident Management Team on wildland fires.

I started my career in wild land firefighting  in 2007. I have served in various positions including recreation, geology, and wildland fire. The majority of my career has been focused in wildland fire as a Fire Prevention Technician. For 13 years, I have brought Smokey Bear’s fire prevention message and Smokey Bear himself into classrooms and communities across Idaho, Northern California, Arizona, Utah, and Oregon. I also serve as a firefighter, fire investigator, incident commander, and public information officer on wildland fires. It is a career near and dear to my heart. I grew up in the Forest Service. My dad was a wildland firefighter for a huge part of his career. My mom and I have worked on Fire Incident Management Teams together. My siblings both have careers in the Forest Service. You could say it runs in the family!

Megan Saylors' path to wildland firefighting wasn't exactly a straight line. As a high school senior near Las Vegas, the idea sounded "downright awful." But a summer job as a Fire Clerk, aka an admin assistant, with the National Park Service sparked a dramatic shift by providing another perspective. Intrigued by the challenge and camaraderie, she made the switch from the office to the field spending her summers fighting wildland fires while earning bachelor’s degrees in Biochemistry and Psychology. Transformed by her experiences, she committed to a career in wildland fire after graduating. Now, as a training specialist at the Redmond Air Center, Megan draws on her diverse experience—from engine and helitack modules to hotshot and rappel crews—to train the next generation of firefighters and advocate for greater diversity in the field.
