Adventures in Coaching: How Instructors & Coaches Keep Us Exploring

Emma is a professional MTB rider, cycling coach, Nordic ski instructor, and trail advocate. The tie that binds these hats together is her passion to mentor others so they can find success in their athletic pursuits. At 47, Emma is still a force to be reckoned with at the start lines of major international MTB stage races, which she does by dialing in all the details of race craft to contend with the raw fitness of the 20-year-olds. As a coach she prepares her athletes with fitness that is specific to their physiology and goal demands, and equips them with strategies from nutrition to tactics. In the winter Emma is the Nordic Instructor Lead at Mt. Bachelor where she shares her inner Nordork with students helping them advance their technique and embrace the technicalities of the sport including waxing and off snow strength and mobility work. With the forest trails as her office, Emma stewards them as the Bend Chapter Representative of the Central Oregon Trail Association to make sure they endure for generations.

Hi, I'm Michelle! 

Get ready for a little bit of sass and a whole lot of inspiration. I am a long-time mover, running coach, and health coach with a passion for empowering women to become happy people in well-loved bodies.  As an RRCA-certified running coach, I lead local training groups for women that center fun, community, and life-long, sustainable fitness. Learn to Run Bend is my women’s beginner-level 5K group, which starts in March 2025! As a Duke University-certified health coach, I focus on the mindset and motivation women need to thrive in the outdoors because I believe that enjoyable movement boosts confidence, self-love, and fitness.  I meet with health coaching clients 1 on 1 or in small groups.

Mary grew up in Sister OR, where she first developed my love for the outdoors. While she did some nordic skiing as a kid, she did not learn how to downhill ski until her 30s! Learning how to ski as an adult has all the highs and lows one can imagine and the experience, for her, is fresh. This gives her major compassion, curiosity and steadiness when she teaches. She intimately know the skills, that they take time to develop and refine, and that learning comes with vulnerability. Mary loves teaching and she LOVES teaching women. She is a PSIA L2 Alpine Instructor at Mt Bachelor and a Nordic Instructor, as well  As a coach, she works to provide empowered feedback to build self-confidence. She plays around with different drills and cues until she finds what clicks for the student– a collaborative process. She trusts her clients' learning rhythm and adapt her lessons to their pace. Mary keeps the lesson light and fun and loves getting to know each individual. She believes it is a beautiful privilege to be out in nature each day, up in the mountains and to guide someone through their learning process.

Maggie has been a yoga teacher and strength coach since 2013, and is a Performance Enhancement Specialist, pre- and postpartum corrective exercise specialist, and Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist. She is also a forever-student and an insatiable learner when it comes to all things related to our physical well-being and how movement impacts our total health and overall well-being, too. Movement is her favorite language, and she aims to help folks find what works for them so they can do what they love and find joy just as much in the process as anything else. Maggie leads group classes at Groove Yoga in Bend, Oregon, as well as online (live, virtual classes + has on-demand offerings) through her website and leads yoga retreats around the world.
