Summer in Scandinavia - Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark

View Profile
Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark 16 DAYS

DAY 1 - SATURDAY, JULY 5 - ARRIVE IN HELSINKI | HELSINKI CITY TOUR

Arrive in Helsinki on a morning flight, check into our hotel, and prepare for our city tour of Helsinki in the afternoon.

You may or may not be able to check into your room. The official check-in time is 2:00 PM, but they usually have rooms ready earlier. If you can, great—you can take a shower and relax a little bit.

At 1:50 PM, we'll meet in the lobby to leave for our guided Helsinki city tour at 2:00 PM. We'll see the Rock Church, the Helsinki Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, and other must-see places in Helsinki. We will also learn about Finland, a proud and fascinating country (the happiest country in the world!).

We will finish the tour at dinner time and go to dinner together.

Accommodations: Glo Art Hotel or similar

Meals: N/A

DAY 2 - SUNDAY, JULY 6 - FLY TO RUKA | FREE DAY AND OPTIONAL FUN ACTIVITIES IN RUKA | CANOEING UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Today we start our adventure and cross the Arctic Circle on a flight to the Finnish Lapland!

We'll take an early flight from Helsinki to the Ruka-Kuusamo area, right above the Arctic Circle.

Ruka is a beautiful, pristine area where we will have the chance to do all kinds of amazing activities.

The options for today are:

  • 12:00 PM: Extreme ATV through the Petäjävaara Wilderness
  • 5:00 PM: Sauna yoga. That's right! Finland is the country of saunas, so we couldn't go to Finland without experiencing an authentic Finnish sauna. But we're taking it to the next level with a yoga class in a sauna! *
  • 10:00 PM: Canoeing outing under the Midnight Sun! Our first chance to see the Midnight Sun! We'll go out on canoes and be right on the water at 12:00 AM to look at the horizon and watch the sun go down and then come back up! Seeing the sun at 12:00 AM is an indescribable experience! The picture up on the left is an actual photo of the Midnight Sun where we will be!

Accommodations: Arctic Zone Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

They might not offer the yoga class if they don't have an instructor at the time. If that's the case, we can still enjoy a Finnish sauna experience without yoga. We will know in advance.

DAY 3 - MONDAY, JULY 7 - FREE MORNING AND AFTERNOON | BEAR WATCHING FROM A HIDE

Today, we'll have a free morning and afternoon in Ruka, or we can go on another super-fun optional adventure: river rafting! We will start at 10:00 AM and go until 1:30 PM.

Then, at 6:00 PM, we'll embark on one of the coolest adventures of our lives! We'll drive into the wilderness and hike to a hide in the middle of the forest, where we will safely spend the night in the heart of a brown bear habitat. Not only are we all but guaranteed to see one of the most majestic creatures in the world, but we're also likely to see them very, very close. I've already shared footage of an incredible bear fight, so here is some more amazing footage from a bear hide in Finland:

Accommodations: Bear Hide in the Kuusamo Wilderness

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 4 - TUESDAY, JULY 8 - DRIVE TO KIRUNA | FREE EVENING IN KIRUNA

Today, right after leaving the hides and having breakfast locally, we leave Finland and the Finnish Lapland. However, we are not done with Lapland! We now embark on a 7-hour scenic drive into country #2, Sweden, and the beautiful Swedish Lapland. We will be even further north now, so our views of the Midnight Sun will be even more dramatic!

Our home base in the Swedish Lapland will be Kiruna, a city surrounded by mountains, which will offer us plenty of fun activities and great spots to see the Midnight Sun. We'll arrive in Kiruna mid-to-late afternoon, check into our hotel, and have the rest of the evening free. With plenty of activities planned for tomorrow, including a Midnight Sun hike, we might just want to have dinner and relax for the rest of the day. We'll see how we feel, but a Midnight Sun outing is still a possibility...

Accommodations: Best Western Arctic Eden or similar

Meals: Not included today, as we weren't in a hotel last night.  We spent the night at the bear hide, so we'll need to stop for breakfast after we leave.

DAY 5 - WEDNESDAY, JULY 9 - FREE DAY IN KIRUNA | CAVE EXPLORING | MIDNIGHT SUN HIKE

Today, we have a full day free in Kiruna, where we can relax and enjoy the city, go for a hike in the mountains, or join our super-fun activity of the day: cave exploring!

At 9:30 AM, we’ll have the option of going on a guided exploration of the Kåppasjokk caves, one of Sweden’s longest cave systems, with winding passages and tunnels extending deep into the bedrock. We’ll suit up with coveralls, helmets, and headlamps before descending underground, where our guide will lead us through a maze of narrow passages, large chambers, and incredible formations shaped by nature’s forces over thousands of years. We'll return at 2:00 PM and have the rest of the day free.

At 10:00 PM we'll meet again for our Midnight Sun hike. We'll hike the Midnight Sun Trail, a moderate 2.5-hour hike that takes us to the top of a mountain with breathtaking views of the city and the Midnight Sun.

Accommodations: Best Western Arctic Eden or similar

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 6 -THURSDAY, JULY 10 - HIKE WITH HUSKIES | ICE HOTEL | ICE SCULPTING CLASS | MIDNIGHT SUN ON ICELANDIC HORSE

We'll start our day with one of the coolest hikes we will ever do—not because we're hiking to anywhere special (although I'm sure any hike in Kiruna is beautiful), but because we will have very special leaders for this hike: huskies! That's right! Everyone will have an adorable husky on a leash as we go on a light, 3-hour hike. How cool is that?

In the afternoon, we will visit the world-famous Ice Hotel—the original. Built in 1989, the Ice Hotel was the first of its kind. Over the years, many ice hotels have been built, but the one in Jukkasjärvi, a city near Kiruna, was the pioneer and remains the only one that stays open during the summer! We will get to visit and see it, and, as if that wasn't unique enough, we will also take an ice sculpting class!

We will return to our hotel mid-to-late afternoon so that we can rest before the last (optional) activity of the day at 10:00 PM: watching the Midnight Sun while riding Icelandic horses!

What a day!!!smiley

Accommodations: Best Western Arctic Eden or similar

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7 - FRIDAY, JULY 11 - FREE MORNING IN KIRUNA | VISIT THE WORLD'S BIGGEST IRON-ORE MINE | FLY TO STOCKHOLM | FREE EVENING IN STOCKHOLM

The tour will start in the morning and last for 3 hours. We'll be back by 1:00 PM when we will be transferred to the airport for our 3:25 PM flight to Stockholm.

We arrive in Stockholm at 5:00 PM and will have the rest of the evening free.

DAY 9 - SUNDAY, JULY 13 - OSLO CITY TOUR | OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO BERGEN

We'll start the day with a city tour of Oslo. We'll meet at 10:20 AM in the lobby with all our luggage to leave at 10:30 AM. On the tour, we will visit the Royal Palace, the Parliament Building, the National Theatre, City Hall, Akershus Fortress, Aker Brygge Harbour, and the Fram Museum.

We'll finish the tour at around 8:00 PM, have dinner, and head to the train station. We'll arrive at the station at 10:30 PM and board our train, which leaves at 11:03 PM, for Bergen.

The 7-hour train ride in a comfortable sleeping cabin with two beds is one of the most scenic train rides in Europe! The sun sets at 10:26 PM today, and we'll have a beautiful, almost full moon, so we'll be able to fully appreciate the stunning landscape of the Norwegian wilderness.

Accommodations: Overnight Train From Oslo to Bergen-Twin Cabin

DAY 10 - MONDAY, JULY 14 - BERGEN | FJORD KAYAK | GLACIER KAYAK

We arrive in Bergen at 6:27 AM and meet our driver and bus for the next five days. We'll stop at a restaurant in Bergen to have breakfast and then head out to Hardangerfjord, the Adventure Fjord of Norway, home to Trolltunga and many other incredible sites.

Today, we will have two opportunities to kayak, both in unique, breathtaking locations: a fjord and a glacier lake!

Our first stop will be Jondal, where we can have free time or go kayaking on a fjord.

After that, we head to Rosendal, where we can again have free time or go kayaking, this time on a glacier lake.

We'll leave Rosendal late in the afternoon and go straight to our hotel to have dinner and rest for the evening after a long and fun day!

AccommodationsHardanger House or similar

DAY 11 - TUESDAY, JULY 15 - FREE DAY IN HARDANGERFJORD - BLUE ICE HIKE | GLACIER YOGA | TROLLTUNGA ZIPLINE

Today, we can have a free morning or partake in one of two glacier activity options: Blue Ice Hike where we will hike with crampons and an ice axe on ice that is thousands of years old (some glacier blue ice is millions of years old!), or  Glacier Yoga, where we will take a yoga class on the glacier or overlooking the glacier!

After that, we will get back on the bus, make a quick stop for lunch and to pick up the people who stayed at the hotel, and head to Tyssedal, where we will have free time to explore the city or join the second activity of the day: Ziplining in a Fjord! Called the most unique nature experience Norway has to offer, Trolltunga Ziplining starts with a 7-kilometer (about 4 miles) bike ride, a 1/4-mile hike, and then a 3-line scenic zipline course, finishing with another 7-kilometer bike ride back.

At the end of the day, we'll check in to our hotel in Tyssedal, the city close to Trolltunga, and at 9:00 PM, go to Trolltunga Hotel for our briefing for tomorrow's hike to Trolltunga.

Accommodations: Tyssedal Hotel or similar
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 12 - WEDNESDAY, JULY 16 - TROLLTUNGA HIKE | TROLLTUNGA VIA FERRATA | TROLLTUNGA OVERNIGHT

Today is the absolute highlight of our trip! We climb Trolltunga, the most famous outdoor postcard of Norway and one of the must-see places in the world for outdoor lovers!

We chose to make Trolltunga an optional activity because it is a strenuous hike. However, it is one of the main reasons we are going on this trip. We recommend that you train and prepare for it so you don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity.

You will start either at 7:30 AM (the day-trip group) or 10:30 AM (the overnight group). We might need to drive together to the Trolltunga Active base, depending on how long it will take to get there. Our driver will let us know.

The hike up should take 5–6 hours, including the via ferrata portion*. Each way is 8.3 miles, and the full hike, up and back, should take 8–12 hours. It is a strenuous hike, so you must be in good physical condition.

The day-trip group will return between 5:30 and 7:30 PM and head back to the hotel for a well-deserved rest. The overnight group will have dinner and experience one of the most magical nights of our lives, staying by ourselves at Trolltunga!

Accommodation: Trolltunga Glamping, or Tyssedal Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast (also dinner if you are spending the night at Trolltunga)

* IF THE VIA FERRATA IS A PROBLEM FOR YOU, YOU CAN DO A HIKE-ONLY VERSION. MANY PEOPLE DO THAT.

DAY 13 - THURSDAY, JULY 17- COME DOWN FROM TROLLTUNGA | FREE DAY IN HARDANGERFJORD

The group that came down yesterday will have a full day of rest and a chance to explore Tyssedal.

The overnight group will have breakfast at Trolltunga and head back down. We should be back around 3:00 PM and will have the rest of the day to rest and relax.

Accommodations: Tyssedal Hotel or similar
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 14 - FRIDAY, JULY 18 - FLY TO COPENHAGEN - COPENHAGEN CITY TOUR BY BIKE | CANAL TOUR

Today, we say goodbye to Hardangerfjord and Norway and head to country #4, Denmark.

We'll leave Tyssedal right after breakfast at 8:00 AM and drive back to Bergen for our 1:35 PM flight to Copenhagen.

We arrive in Copenhagen at 2:55 PM, check into our hotel, and then go on a super-fun city tour by bike! Copenhagen is one of the world's most bike-friendly cities, so there's no better way to explore than on a 3-hour bike tour. At the end of the bike tour, we’ll enjoy yet another fun and unique experience: a canal tour of Copenhagen!

Accommodations: Imperial Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 15 - SATURDAY, JULY 19 - KRONBORG CASTLE (HAMLET'S CASTLE) | FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE | VIKING MUSEUM | SAIL ON A VIKING SHIP

Today, we go back in history and visit several structures, some of which are 1,000 years old!

We'll start our tour at 9:00 AM, beginning with a visit to Kronborg Castle. Kronborg is a castle and historical stronghold in the town of Helsingør, Denmark. Immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

After that, we head to Frederiksborg Castle. Frederiksborg Castle is one of the most famous castles in Denmark, and for good reason: situated on three islands surrounded by a lake and beautiful gardens, it's simply breathtaking. Home to the Museum of National History, the grounds are full of rich history, architecture, and gardens.

Next, we head to Roskilde, where we will visit the Viking Ship Museum, which houses five original Viking ships. The ships were excavated in 1962 but were deliberately sunk by the Vikings in 1070 to block the most important fairway and protect Roskilde from an enemy attack from the sea. The oldest of the ships, Roskilde 6, was built in 1025, 1,000 years ago!

But we're not going to stop there! As part of the visit to the museum, we will go sailing on a replica Viking ship!
